What is the difference between hard water and soft water?

Hard water contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, like calcium and magnesium. But water in its pure form does not contain these minerals. As it passes through grounds and rocks, these minerals tend to get mixed with water. Soft water contains little to no extra elements. Hard water makes the laundry look discoloured. It also cause stains on dishes, and soap scum on bathtubs. It leaves scales on pipes and appliances which may cause damages. It uses up more energy.
